A day retreat or course is a great way to come together to practice and maybe learn something new.

All our events are by donation. Your donation when you book goes to cover our expenses, and on the day you can offer donations to the teacher who also offers their time freely.

Exploring the emptiness of self - supporting a deeper movement towards joy, compassion and equanimity arising from insight.

The emptiness of self is one of the central aspects of the emptiness teachings at the heart of the dharma. The self is understood to be a dependently originated fabrication lacking inherent existence. At the same time in the midst of our daily lives the experience of self may feel unquestionably real. Our whole life is wrapped around this important and at times complex sense of self.

In the ‘anatta’ (not-self) practices we will become more familiar with the mind’s intuitive tendency to identify with the objects of experience; we habitually conceive of the bodily sensations, thoughts, mind states, emotions and moments of consciousness as either belonging to ourselves or as parts of our selves. In this meditation practice we learn to compassionately let go of this habitual identification and to see all experience as neither self nor belonging to self. This way of practicing can lead to a profound understanding of the nature of the self and perception, and supports a deeper movement towards joy, compassion and equanimity arising from insight.

Feeding your Demons day retreat

Feeding your Demons day retreat

Feeding Your Demons

Feeding Your Demons is a “psycho-spiritual” process derived from the ancient Tibetan Buddhist practice of Chöd. Instead of trying to overcome our ‘demons’ using force or aggression, we develop a compassionate attitude and make offerings to them, imagining that we are feeding them in order that they may become our allies and not our enemies. What moves the heart?

What moves the heart?

When we think about practicing meditation we often yearn for stillness.  So, what of the emotions, those movers and shakers of our heart and mind?   In Buddhism they can be seen as hindrances on the path to peace.

At Community Base, Queens Rd Brighton.

Mindfulness in Nature with Jiva Masheder

Mindfulness in Nature with Jiva Masheder

Do come and join us at the beautiful Plot 22 for a day of mindfulness practice in nature.

Many of us find great solace and joy in being outside spending time with plants, birds and other wildlife. The more mindfulness and loving attention we can bring to the experience, the more enriching it is. Very often a sense of love and care also arises from these encounters.

The natural world is also a wonderful place to directly observe the central Buddhist teachings of impermanence, inter-connectedness or non-self and satisfactoriness. These core universal principles, once understood fully, have the power to bring distress, despair, and struggle to an end, opening the door to a life lived with peace and dignity.

The day will consist of a variety of guided mindfulness practices and reflections in nature, adapted for inside if required, and some optional sharing and mindful speaking practice. We will be largely in silence for most of the day, to facilitate deep connection and listening, and it will be suitable for all levels of meditation experience.

This lovely site consists of 2 ½ allotments near to Aldrington train station dedicated to eco-therapy, a healing space using the benefits of being around plants and wildlife to find peace and joy. It has covered areas in case of rain, a toilet and running water. The site is level with good paths, if you have accessibility requirements, please get in touch to discuss. Drinks will be provided but please bring your lunch as it is a bit of a walk to a café or shop.

There are chairs at the site but if you prefer to sit closer to the ground, please bring your own cushion/mat/blanket.

Jiva is a graduate of the Gaia House Community Dharma Leader programme, has been practicing largely in the Western Insight and Thai Forest Sangha traditions since 1997.

Her day job is teaching and supervising Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Self Compassion courses and she brings this accessible, interactive teaching style to her Dharma teaching.
